Star Wars Wednesday - A New Hope...for the RPG

At my rate of posting this year, I ought to change the name of this series to Star Wars Monthly….but I won’t. It has gone on too long and maybe I’ll get back to a more regular schedule. At least there is some positive news on the Star Wars RPG / Genesys RPG front. The games will continue to be printed and produced by a division of Asmodee, but not by Fantasy Flight Games.

Announced at the GAMA trade show and then spread via Reddit, Twitter, and so on, Asmodee’s Edge Studio will take over printing and publication of Edge/Age/F&D, Genesys, Legend of the 5 Rings RPG, the End of the World series, and….Zombicide RPG? Don’t know where that last one came from, but Edge has been responsible for foreign language RPG publications. Beyond that, which I learned from the internet like everyone else, we don’t know much. They didn’t have an English language page until sometime in the last 24 hours. You can see it here. It is temporary, just announcing the studio and providing an option to sign up for email newsletter announcements, which you should totally do if you’re interested. It helps show interest, which is always a good thing, and will most likely be the primary source of news at least in the near term.

Q&A:

  • Will anyone from FFG’s former RPG staff be involved? I’m guessing not, but you never know, they theoretically could be rehired or brought on in a contract or freelance capacity assuming they are interested and given the opportunity. There are a few previous RPG staff members who moved to other roles within FFG well before the layoff, so again in theory they could be tangentially involved.

  • Reprints of existing books? Yes, but what and when is unknown.

  • New books? Yes, in the future. Note that most RPG print products usually take a year or more to produce, so unless something in the works is/was transferred, I expect it to be a while before something new shows up.

  • Will I work on the new books? I’m interested, as always, so I hope to get the opportunity to do so.

  • Genesys Foundry? No word on its status, but with the Genesys game continuing, it seems like it will.

  • What about Android Shadow of the Beanstalk setting? I haven’t heard mention of this yet, but I noticed the Android setting was not included on Edge’s website’s Genesys paragraph. I doubt it was an oversight, so it might mean there is something different with the Android IP. We’ll see.

  • What about Asmodee becoming a full distributor of games in North America? We’re well outside my realm of knowledge, but here’s one article with some details.

And finally, in other Genesys news, FFG posted a preview of the Mutant Invasion KeyForge RPG card pack of adversaries, and more (which I didn’t work on) for the forthcoming KeyForge RPG (which I did work on).
